Jerry Brown is running for the office he once held - governor of California. It started when Republican candidate Meg Whitman yanked Brown's chain with a TV ad dredging up a 1992 New Hampshire primary debate in which Clinton charged that Brown raised taxes.
At a campaign stop Sunday, Brown said Whitman's "even got Bill Clinton lying about me. Clinton's a nice guy, but whoever said he always told the truth?"
He continued, alluding to Clinton's affair: "I mean you remember, right? There's that whole story there about did he or didn't he?"
In a mea culpa, Brown told reporters, "Bill Clinton was an excellent President. ... It was wrong for me to joke about an incident from many years ago, and I'm sorry."
